Hair adds more flavor to our overall personality. Good hair has a huge impact on our moods. If you are healthy, you are likely to have a great hair day instead of having bad hair. Research has also shown how healthy hair can shape your day to a potentially greater extent than you want it to be. And healthy hair lies in your overall daily or weekly routine that you devote to hair care.
Here’s something I want to tell to every man and woman; your hair deserves and needs as much TLC as you do for your skin. The logic here is that there’s a huge possibility that the same ingredients that make your skin glow can also do the very best for your hair.
Hair and scalp experience similar levels of beating from the sun and pollution. However, it is only right if you give a similar level of love to your tresses as to your skin. It is time to pamper your hair with a hair care routine. Step up your hair care game with this simple daily hair care routine. This can keep frizz and damage at bay and have only good days ahead.
Typical Hair Concerns
Before moving my daily hair care routine, it is important to think of some typical hair concerns. These concerns can help you rethink your current hair state. And don’t forget, achieving healthy locks is a different journey for everyone.
Typical hair concerns that most people confront are:
- Split ends
- Dryness
- Damaged hair
- Frizz
- Flyaways
- Oiliness or greasiness
- Lack of volume
- Itchy, oily, dry, and flaky-like scalp issues
- Color or chemical damage
The more you understand about your hair concerns, the better it will be for you to make changes, and add things into your daily routine for proper care, and optimum results.
Goals for Healthy Hair Care Routine
This is a smart approach to setting hair goals that set the stage very next to your typical hair concerns. This can help you create and prepare for a better routine that can ensure lasting gains. You may go on to choose the right products to achieve your desired results!
Healthy hair care routine goals may look like:
- Wave and curl definition
- Smoothness and shine
- Strength, repair, and hydration
- Volume, texture, and body
- Color longevity
- Overall healthy hair
Now you know about your hair concerns, and goals you want to achieve on routine. Now, it is time to build strong hair with your routine.
Steps in the Hair Care Routine
Every basic hair care routine has some simple steps including cleansing, styling, and conditioning. However, there may be changes in the frequency depending on your hair type, lifestyle, and preferences. Let’s cover the steps of my hair care routine.
Cleansing
Cleansing is the first hair care routine step in almost any haircare routine. Just like our skin, cleaning also benefits our hair. Perhaps you may not have to do it daily depending on how dry your hair and scalp are and how many products you use on your hair that cause buildup.
Washing your hair will make you feel clean, and greasy, and remove any products, dirt, and dead skin cells that can cause buildup.
How will I cleanse? Below are the steps:
- Opt for a gentle, sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo for hair and scalp health in the long run.
- Use fingertips to create lather on your scalp, instead of using fingernails.
- Don’t wash your hair very often, especially with shampoos, this may strip the hair of natural oils, and disturb the microbiome of your scalp. I will recommend you wash your hair using a moisturizing shampoo every 3 to 4 days.
- Preferably use lukewarm water to wash and rinse your hair as very hot water can cause damage.
Conditioning
Conditioning is the very next step in the hair care routine. Conditioning detangles, seals the cuticles, and provides moisture to your hair. This will replenish the moisture that may have been removed by the shampoo. It will also remove any knots or tangles that were caused by massaging your shampoo.
So, how can you condition hair?
- Apply conditioner on wet hair, and squeeze out any extra water. Apply conditioner to the lengths of your hair and leave. Leave it for 1-2 minutes, and rinse it with cool water.
- Gently comb through your hair, using a wide-toothed comb. This is done after conditioning to ensure it is distributed evenly.
- Opt for a lightweight, silicone-free conditioner that will not weigh your hair down.
Detangling
Detangling helps to minimize breakage and eliminate knots. A leave-in conditioner is a great producer to smoothen the detangling process. It helps to smooth locks and prepares them to detangle with a brush or wide-tooth comb. You can all so choose to use a hair oil or serum before detangling.
Spray the product onto the mid-lengths from an arm’s length distance. Comb through the hair so the used product disperses evenly.
How can I do detangling:
- The detangling process starts when you are showering. Apply conditioner like Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant.
- Apply conditioner to hair, and gently comb through the lengths with your fingertips to remove big knots.
- Brush or comb from the lower portion of your hair, working way up to the roots.
Styling
Always make sure hair is well prepared before using heated tools. This will add an extra protective layer against breakage, and enhance styling results. This makes hairstyling last.
Prepare hair for the styling routine using a lightweight styling primer. This will prevent frizz, reduce dry time, better hair texture, and hold well when using heated tools.
Don’t forget to use heat protectants to protect hair against heat damage caused by blow-drying, styling tools, and the sun.
How to do styling:
- Avoid using heated tools like a curling iron or straightener on wet hair when styling your hair. Apply a heat protectant, and leave hair for a few minutes to air dry before applying heat tools.
- Apply a pea-sized amount as a primer as it goes a little longer way.
- If you want to enhance the texture of your hair after styling, apply texture spray.
Moisturizing
After styling your hair or letting it air dry, you might want to moisturize your hair a little bit. Your strands may benefit from a moisture boost on days when you are not washing your hair. This is the time to use a multitasker, hair oil! Hair oils protect hair from frizz and prevent dryness.
How to moisturize hair:
- Hair oil goes a little long way. Use 3 to 4 drops for your thick hair, 2-3 for medium hair, and 1-2 drops for fine hair.
- Before applying the hair oil to your hair, warm it up between your palms and fingers. Then, apply it to your hair using your fingers in combing motions so the oil distributes evenly in the hair.
- You can also give your hair a much-needed moisture boost using a leave-in conditioner in between washes.
Treatment
There are three treatments that you can add to your hair care routine to give an extra TLC. Regular hair treatments are excellent ways to protect your hair from dryness, damage, oily, flaky, or dry scalp, and make overall appeal and health of hair better.
Oil Treatment: Make two sections of your hair. Take a full syringe of hair oil, and apply it to each section until fully coated. Braid your hair, and leave it for a few hours or overnight to let it absorb. If the oil doesn’t absorb fully, give hair a light rinse or cleanse.
Scalp Treatment: Make 1” (3cm) sections from the hairline to the crown, and apply small increments of scalp treatment directly onto the scalp. Gently massage your hair with your fingertips for five minutes to distribute oil. Do not rinse it. Leave it overnight. Simply wash your hair if you experience residue or oiliness in the morning. Use this treatment twice a week if you face recurring irritation. As the scalp concerns subside, move towards this application weekly. Use scalp treatment twice a month to prevent irritation, itching, flaking, and more.
Mask Treatment: Apply a generous amount of hair mask to damp or dry hair from mid-lengths to ends. Leave it for 5-7 minutes, and then rinse it thoroughly. For a more nourishing treatment, leave it overnight. Wash it in the morning. Use it twice a week for optimal repair and restoration.
Swap Products as the Seasons Change
Most often have to make necessary changes to their routine as the season changes. For example, we need products with extra hydrating properties as the winter months hit. Thicker creams get more favors this season.
However, you may need more lightweight formulas as the summer months hit. This is important to keep hair bouncy in the face of humidity.
There can be more changes according to your hair type and textures. If you have distinct hair concerns and they are constant like damaged hair, consult healthcare immediately.
