Backpacking the “W” in Chile Patagonia for Beginners

The “W” is the W Trek located in Torres del Paine, Patagonia. This trek offers unparalleled views in a fairly remote location, which makes it popular with hikers and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. If you’ve never hiked the “W” before, you’ll want to keep this beginners guide in mind.

Location

The W Trek is located at the southern end of Patagonia, known as Torres del Paine. The W trek is just one of the many treks featured in the Torres del Paine park, though it is the most popular trek for hikers who visit this country.

Difficulty Level

The W trek takes about 5 days and 4 nights for the average hiker, so beginners should expect to take at least 5 days/4 nights to complete this hike. The W Trek is not considered extremely difficult, but keep in mind that you do need to be in good shape and have the ability to climb into the Frances Valley area; you’ll also need to climb the towers (torres!) in order to access areas of the trek.

Best Season

The W trek is open to hikers throughout the year. It should be noted that hikers are only allowed to go alone or without a tour guide in between the months of October and April. From May through September, hikers are required to arrange for a local guide. Unless you’re traveling with a partner or a group, you may wish to hire a guide regardless of the season.

What to Bring

You should make sure to bring the following items on you W hike:

  • Sleeping pad and tent, unless you’re reserving a refugios
  • Water bottles with filtration
  • Medium-weight hiking boots
  • Lightweight backpack

If you’re a beginner, reserving a spot at the refugios is a great idea as it will allow you a place to sleep and most refugios offer meal services, hot showers and toilets.
