Uganda is a small yet vibrant country that is best known for its friendly locals and its dedication to protecting natural wildlife. If you’re interested in traveling to Uganda for an upcoming trip, consider the following beginners guide that will help you plan out your very first visit.
Where to Stay
Where you decide to stay in Uganda will ultimately depend on what you would like to do during your trip. Accommodations range from small bed-and-breakfasts to luxury resorts and everything in between. For a chic hotel at a reasonable price, consider the Pearl of Africa Hotel; or if you’ll be heading out on safari tours, consider the Enzganzi Game Lodge or Kampala Forest Resort.
What to Do
The most popular activity in Uganda is known as “gorilla tracking,” or going on a guided tour to explore the protected habitant of Uganda’s gorilla population. These tours require reservations but they are well worth the time and effort. Going on tours and safaris to see other wildlife, such as chimpanzees and even lions, is also popular. Other activities include white water rafting in Jinja and heading to Queen Elizabeth National Park to take in more stunning natural sights.
Beginners Tip & Tricks
If you’re headed to Uganda for the first time, you will want to keep these tips in mind:
- Visit during the dry seasons–June to August and December to February–for the best weather
- Purchase gorilla tracking permits at least 6 months in advance, because they sell out quickly; these can be booked through members of the Association of Uganda Tour Operators
- Bring appropriate clothing–long sleeved pants and shirts to prevent insect bites, sturdy hiking shoes, and water repellent clothing
- Get malaria pills for your visit and wear insect repellent, especially during the hours when bugs are most active
